What is a vitamin?
The term “vitamin” was introduced in 1912 by a Polish scientist, Casimir Funk, to describe
natural substances in food that are essential for life. Working on symptoms of beriberi,
Funk proposed that four specific diseases were caused by a lack of four different vital
“amines” in the diet: scurvy (severe blood loss from leaky blood vessels - a lack of vitamin C),
rickets (softening of the bones - a lack of vitamin D), pellagra (skin changes, persistent
diarrhea, dementia - a lack of vitamin B3), and beriberi (enlarged and weak heart, pain in the
limbs, weak muscles - a lack of vitamin B1).
Today, we know that there are more than 20 organic molecules called vitamins, each of which
has a different chemical structure and role in the body.
There are two distinct groups of vitamins: those that are soluble in water (vitamin C and all
B - vitamins) and are distributed throughout all watery components of the cell; and those that
are soluble in fat (vitamins A, D, E and K), which are found mostly in cell compartments rich
in fat, such as the membranes.
Although they are critical to sustain life, vitamins are mostly not produced in our bodies.

Why does sugar rot teeth?
We know Streptococcus bacteria can live on sugars in the mouth. They release acids that are capable of eating away tooth enamel. It's not just sweets that promote tooth decay but any starchy food that the enzymes in your mouth can break down into sugar.
Try to conquer one meal or one snack at a time.
Start tomorrow and make your breakfast sugar-free. Next week, replace your afternoon snack. The following week, cut out dessert after dinner. Keep this up and before too long you'll realize that it's not impossible.
Why is there phosphoric acid in Coke?
Coke and Pepsi contain phosphoric acid. Why do they need an acid in a cola drink? Acids are sour and they are used to enhance the sweetness of the syrup and provide a little zip to the drink. By the way, phosphoric acid is not the only acid in Coke. The carbonated water used to make the drink is also a weak acid (carbonic acid). The acids found in Coke are strong enough to dissolve rust.
How much dirt will you eat in your lifetime?
Over the course of your life, you will probably eat several pounds of dirt! It may sound like a lot, but stretched out over seventy or eighty years, it's not that much, although you could grow a nice potted plant in it.

Three percent of canned peaches can be moldy or wormy. Twenty or more maggots are allowed in one hundred grams of canned mushrooms. This may sound disgusting, but bugs and worms won't hurt you and they are a good source of protein! Many of these beasties are killed during processing. It's one thing to eat a dead worm you can't see but another to eat the live critter.

Michael Jacobsen, the executive director, says the dangers of excessive salt consumption have been forgotten in recent years. The lawsuit calls on the FDA to change salt's status from "generally recognized as "safe" to that of "food additive", giving the agency more regulatory muscle to limit salt in processed food.
