The term “vitamin” was introduced in 1912 by a Polish scientist, Casimir Funk, to describe natural substances in food that are essential for life. Working on symptoms of beriberi, Funk proposed that four specific diseases were caused by a lack of four different vital “amines” in the diet: scurvy (severe blood loss from leaky blood vessels - a lack of vitamin C), rickets (softening of the bones - a lack of vitamin D), pellagra (skin changes, persistent diarrhea, dementia - a lack of vitamin B3), and beriberi (enlarged and weak heart, pain in the limbs, weak muscles - a lack of vitamin B1).

Today, we know that there are more than 20 organic molecules called vitamins, each of which has a different chemical structure and role in the body.

There are two distinct groups of vitamins: those that are soluble in water (vitamin C and all B - vitamins) and are distributed throughout all watery components of the cell; and those that are soluble in fat (vitamins A, D, E and K), which are found mostly in cell compartments rich in fat, such as the membranes.

Although they are critical to sustain life, vitamins are mostly not produced in our bodies.

Dr. Joseph Mercola, an osteopathic physician, wrote a book about artificial sweeteners titled Sweet Deception. He says these are far worse for us than sugar. “Aspartame is marketed as natural, but it’s actually a dipeptide, which means there are two amino acids linked together, aspartic acid and phenylalanine.

Well, those two amino acids are natural, but they were never designed to be linked together like that and then taken in such large amounts. They’re actually connected with what’s called an ester bond.

When this ester bond breaks apart, methanol is transported past the blood–brain barrier and goes into the brainand turns to formaldehyde, which is very, very toxic and could cause tumors, seizures, migraines, and headaches.”

Aspartame can be commonly found in the following foods and drinks: Breath mints, Juice drinks Carbonated soft, drinks Maple syrup Cereal, Nutritional bars Chewing gum, Slushies Fat- free yogurts, Sugar- free cookies Flavored coffee syrups, Sugar- free gelatin Flavored water, Sugar- free ice cream Hard candy, Table sweeteners Iced tea, Vegetable drinks

Why does sugar rot teeth?

We know Streptococcus bacteria can live on sugars in the mouth. They release acids that are capable of eating away tooth enamel. It's not just sweets that promote tooth decay but any starchy food that the enzymes in your mouth can break down into sugar.

Going sugar-free

Try to conquer one meal or one snack at a time.

Start tomorrow and make your breakfast sugar-free. Next week, replace your afternoon snack. The following week, cut out dessert after dinner. Keep this up and before too long you'll realize that it's not impossible.

Why is there phosphoric acid in Coke?

Coke and Pepsi contain phosphoric acid. Why do they need an acid in a cola drink? Acids are sour and they are used to enhance the sweetness of the syrup and provide a little zip to the drink. By the way, phosphoric acid is not the only acid in Coke. The carbonated water used to make the drink is also a weak acid (carbonic acid). The acids found in Coke are strong enough to dissolve rust.

How much dirt will you eat in your lifetime?

Over the course of your life, you will probably eat several pounds of dirt! It may sound like a lot, but stretched out over seventy or eighty years, it's not that much, although you could grow a nice potted plant in it.

The Food and Drug (Bug) Administration allows certain amounts of dirt and other "foreign matter" to be present in foods; for instance, they allow one or more whole insects or fifty insect fragments, two or more rodent hairs, and one or more rodent excreta in every fifty grams of cornmeal. Three percent of canned peaches can be moldy or wormy. Twenty or more maggots are allowed in one hundred grams of canned mushrooms. This may sound disgusting, but bugs and worms won't hurt you and they are a good source of protein! Many of these beasties are killed during processing. It's one thing to eat a dead worm you can't see but another to eat the live critter.

Nu·tri·tion 1. The process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues. 2. The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans. 3. A source of nourishment; food.

Now that we have an idea of what nutrition means, let's consider some of the things that have been written about various foods, suppliments, additives, by doctors, dieticians, nutritional experts, and by people who are genuinely interested in what can or cannot be eaten for a healthy body.

SALT"The high sodium content of the American diet—mostly from processed foods—represents an enormous health problem,” said Dr. Claude Lenfant, president of the World Hypertension League. “If we could reduce the sodium in processed and restaurant foods by half, we could save about 150,000 lives per year."

Denny’s Lumberjack Slam breakfast has 4,460 mg of sodium and a typical order of General Tso’s chicken with rice has 3,150 mg, according to the report.

Excessive Salt Americans have increased their salt consumption steadily in recent decades to what is now an average daily consumption of 3,375 milligrams (or 3.375 grams = .12 ounces); which greatly exceeds the 2,300 millgrams recommended by the FDA. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington nutrition advocacy group has announced that they are suing the FDA in an effort to get the government to crack down on sodium in foods available to the US consumer. Michael Jacobsen, the executive director, says the dangers of excessive salt consumption have been forgotten in recent years. The lawsuit calls on the FDA to change salt's status from "generally recognized as "safe" to that of "food additive", giving the agency more regulatory muscle to limit salt in processed food.

Turn back on your tormentors with one simple question. WHY?

Know what? NOBODY KNOWS WHY. In the words of a famous nutritionist at Penn State University, 'I can't tell you...and I've written a book on water.'

Maybe your kidneys need it? No, according to a kidney expert at the National Institutes of Health, the average healthy adult gets all the water he or she needs from solid food alone.

Well then, perhaps it's to replace the water you lose from drinking coffee? Wrong again! The Journal of the American College of Nutrition confirms that caffeine doesn't dehydrate healthy people.

It's really easy. Starting tomorrow, drink no tap water. Not because of industrial pollution, but because of chemicals that 'health authorities' are adding to your water. For example...

People who warned against FLUORIDATION used to be ridiculed, but guess what? In Scandinavia, in fact all of Europe, and nearly every other medically advanced nation, they have now banned the practice.

Know why? Because fluoride makes your body absorb extra aluminum . And where does the aluminum go? Your brain. And what metal shows up alarmingly in the brains of Alzheimer's victims? You guessed it. (Hmm... Maybe our health authorities have been drinking too much water?)

Did you know?

As you know, the sun's ultraviolet rays help your body produce vitamin D.

But did you know that one of the reasons vitamin D is crucial to good health is because it helps your body produce natural antibiotics that can help fight both viral and bacterial infections?

In fact, widely used in the 1930s, 40s and early 50s, "photoluminescense therapy" has been proven time and time again to help treat serious viral or bacterial infections that would otherwise require powerful, and sometimes dangerous, drugs.
